Why We Need Donald Trump Now
March 27, 2022
If you are a regular reader of my posts, you are probably scratching your head over this title. But, as my old boss used to say, “Every once in a while even a blind pig finds an acorn.”
The whole world it seems is trying figure out what is going on in the mind of Vladimir Putin. We could try to assemble a group of psychiatrists to study his behavior (something the CIA has most likely done for years). But assessing Putin from a distance is difficult. We could talk to his closest associates who have defected to the west to see what they could tell us. The problem with either of these approaches is that Putin plays his hand close to his vest and deliberately obfuscates his intentions. As a trained KBG man, he is adept at masking his feelings and lying adroitly. But there is an alternative method we could employ.
One common technique to predict and plan for the future is to use a simulation. (The military conducts these on a regular basis.) A political simulation group was assembled in 2020 to game out what would happen depending on the outcome of the 2020 election. One of their predictions was chillingly prescient. But how can we simulate Vladimir Putin? If only we had our own Putin to consult. And now you know how the title for this piece came about.
We have, in America, our own version of Vladimir Putin. Donald Trump has been an admirer of Putin for as long as we can document his comments. Most recently he praised Putin’s ploy of naming the two eastern Ukrainian provinces independent states and absorbing them into Russia. To Trump, that was genius. To everyone else, it was anathema. To understand how Putin thinks, we need only put Trump to work.
Granted, there are limitations to this approach. Putin is a better evil genius than Trump. He is more ruthless at his core. Putin will dispatch people to kill people. Trump will indirectly hint to his accomplices the need to do something illegal so his hands are not on the deed directly. Murder is outside his repertoire. So our version of Putin is at least somewhat watered down. He is, however, the best clone we have.
We need to put Trump in a room with our military and political experts and lay out for him some possible scenarios. We can create a Russian team that Trump directs and pit it against a US/NATO team. Each side could initiate actions or make responses to the other. By trying out various strategies from the western side, and observing Trump’s responses in charge of the Russian side, we could do a better job of forecasting what we should do. It won’t be perfect, but it could add a useful dimension to our effort to help Ukraine.
Why is this a good idea? Using Trump is a good idea precisely because Biden is so unlike Putin. Putin has a killer instinct. Biden has a bent toward cooperation. That is not a good match up. Biden will hang back and respond to Putin. What is needed instead is a willingness to confront Putin and go after him aggressively. There Trump has the edge. He is combative, duplicitous, unscrupulous, and just as sociopathic as Putin. He may not be as clever, but personality wise he matches up well. It’s time for the White House to call Mar-a-Lago and enlist the help of the ex president in out scheming a tyrant.
